DC Brushless Motors
Since 1951, IMC Magnetics has been an acknowledged pioneer in the design, development, prototyping, production and testing of DC brushless motors and fans for the aerospace, defense and industrial/commercial sectors of industry. IMC has developed and produced high performance, high quality DC brushless motors and fans for a number of applications, including military and commercial planes, helicopters, military vehicle, marine, and electronic enclosure cooling, to name a few. In addition, IMC Magnetics designed and manufactured DC brushless fans for Honeywell Canada for use in the Hawker Horizon. IMC also engineered and built DC brushless motors for BE Aerospace that are used in the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777. Almost every DC brushless motor and fan that IMC Magnetics designs is custom engineered to meet the customer's specific requirements and application.
As noted above, the DC brushless motors designed by IMC Magnetics
have been used in many different systems, and the use of IMC DC
brushless motors in fans is just one of these many applications.
In fact, any fan driven by AC power can be converted to DC by replacing
the induction motor with a DC brushless motor. In DC brushless motors,
commutation –that is, the act of reversing every half cycle
(180 degrees) the direction of current flowing through the windings
of the motor – is accomplished by using a discrete electronic
control system or circuit, thereby eliminating the brushes used
in conventional DC motors. Depending on the application, IMC Magnetics
has designed the electronic driver as an integral part of the assembly
or as an external module. Some of IMC’s DC brushless fans,
especially the flat type, have an externally mounted electronic
control circuit due to space limitations. Some of the advantages
of DC brushless motors are improved efficiency, a low level of electromagnetic
interference (no sparking), and better reliability (due to the elimination
of commutator brushes, which eventually wear out).
IMC's market analysis has determined there is a growing demand for DC brushless fans for a wide range of industries and applications. The IMC Magnetics 270 Volt DC brushless mixed flow fan is just one example of an aerospace brushless fan application. Recent IMC Magnetics designs include the development of a DC brushless sensorless 3-phase motor for aircraft use. This DC brushless sensorless motor is available in frame sizes 9 through 53. More conventional DC brushless motors (with sensors) are also offered in frame sizes 9 through 53. In addition, IMC specializes in designing custom DC brushless fans and motors.
